-Planning meeting this Friday 9/16, 7pm at the Stauffer’s, Come help us plan for the party! We need volunteers!

-Our neighbor, Ellen Freudenheim, would like to invite those who are interested to contact her about a night of political organizing for Hillary Clinton.

Ideal Properties has graciously donated some carnival games, a clown, face painting and snow cones. Thanks!

Kids games, Bouncy Castle. Bike parade, Donut-on-a-string, fire hydrant sprinkler.

YOU SMELL RODENT DROPPINGS UNDER YOUR STOOP OF ENTRANCE TO CELLAR.
YOU FIND RAT DROPPINGS UNDER YOUR STOOP.

 YOU DISCOVER TORN BAGS, BOXES AND GNARLED ITEMS UNDER THE STOOP.
YOU NOTICE THERE ARE GNARLED HOLES NEAR BOTTOM SIDES OF TRASH CANS.

YOUR TRASH CAN LIDS ARE NOT ATTACHED AND NOTICE TRASH BAGS HAVE BEEN CHEWED OPEN.
YOU HEAR RUSTLING IN THE PLANTINGS AND GROUND COVER IN FRONT OF YOUR BUILDING!

YOU NOTICE BURROWING HOLES IN YOUR PLANTED AREA!

ADDITIONALLY NEIGHBORS ARE SEEING RATS SCURRYING ABOUT BETWEEN BUILDINGS AND RUNNING BACK AND FOURTH ACROSS THE STREET. THIS NOT A CASE OF ONE OR TWO RODENTS.

YOU ARE NOT ALONE AS THIS CONDITION HAS SPREAD TO AND AFFECTED YOUR NEIGHBORS AS WELL.

WHY DO YOU THINK THIS IS HAPPENING TO YOU AND YOUR BUILDING?

THERE ARE MULTIPLE REASONS WHY.

RECENT INFRASTRUCTURE CONSTRUCTION REPAIRS BY THE CITY IN THE SURROUNDING VICINITY.

 WATER AND SEWER MAIN REPAIRS TO NEARBY BUILDINGS, SOME ON THIS VERY BLOCK.

MAJOR RENOVATIONS (GUT REHABS) TO BUILDINGS IN NEIGHBORHOOD.

 NEW BUILDING CONSTRUCTION ALONG FOURTH AVENUE.

  AND OF COURSE, THE BIGGEST REASON IS CONSTRUCTION OF THE BARCLAY'S CENTER.

ALL OF THE ABOVE SITUATIONS CAUSE A DISRUPTION IN THE GROUND WHERE THE RATS BURROW, KEEP WARM AND BREED. THE DISRUPTIONS CAUSE THEM TO SCATTER TO OTHER AREAS AND NOW WE'RE LIVING IN THE MIDDLE OF IT.

ERADICATION OF RATS IS NOT AN AESTHETIC ISSUE…

RATS ARE A HEALTH AND SAFETY ISSUE!

SOLUTIONS:

SOME OF YOUR NEIGHBORS WHO HAVE TAKEN PROACTIVE ACTION HAVE TRAPPED AS MANY AS EIGHT RATS , BLOCKED UNDER STOOP ACCESS AND AND NO LONGER HAVE RATS HARBORING UNDER THEIR STOOPS.

ALL NEIGHBORS, BUILDING OWNERS ARE AFFECTED AND THUS SHOULD TAKE ACTION TO ERADICATE RATS FROM OUR BLOCK AND SHOULD BE STRONGLY RECOMMENDED TO BE PASSED ON TO ADJOINING BLOCKS.

MEASURES TO RID OUR BLOCK OF RATS CAN BE TAKEN IN THE FORM OF:

INSTALLING METAL SCREENING FASTENED TO CELLAR ENTRANCE GATES. THE COST OF MATERIALS FOR ABOVE IS INEXPENSIVE AND TASK CAN BE COMPLETED IN JUST A FEW HOURS.

USING METAL SCREENS OR MESH TO PROTECT CELLAR UTILITY VENTS  PREVENTING CELLAR ACCESS.

SETTING UP TRAPS TO KILL RATS.

 REPLACING DAMAGED OR DETERIORATED TRASH CANS

KEEPING TRASH CAN COVERS FASTENED.

RINSING ALL METAL, PLASTIC, GLASS RECYCLING – REMOVING ANY FOOD RESIDUE.

CALLING 311 AND REPORTING WHERE YOU ARE SEEING RODENT PROBLEMS. INSPECTORS WILL CHECK IT OUT.

MATERIALS AND RAT ABATEMENT PRODUCTS CAN BE PURCHASED AT HARDWARE STORES AND PLACES LIKE HOME DEPOT & LOWES.

ANOTHER OPTION: HOME OWNERS CAN ALSO HIRE A HANDYMAN TO TAKE THESE STEPS.

what a great day

wow... the 2011 block party was a big success. thanks to all who helped out. it was so much fun to see our neighbors and spend the day together.

block party update

we are officially approved - the city just okayed the block party... less than 24 hours to go...
what a great system.

we are setting up:

-- a visit from the squad one firefighters
-- a bouncy ride for the kids
-- a huge BBQ
-- free coffee from cafe regular
-- a big potluck lunch
-- games for the kids including PINATAS!
-- and a whole lot more

here's a block party update (sat sept 10th - we close off the block at about 8am)

--block party signs - they are going up today (thurs.)

--please be ready to move your car off the block friday night so we have room in the street.

--please post a note on this blog if you want to bring a dish for lunch or volunteer for kid activities or if you would like to help us organize this thing.
